State Pride

Have you ever noticed something in common about the people who live in West Virginia, Texas, and Hawaii?

My friends who moved to WV said that people there will sit through the national anthem, but stand up and remove their hats when John Denver's song,"Country Road, Take Me Home" comes on.

Texas originally wanted to be their own country. I guess that is why their flag is just like the American flag, except with 2 stripes, and only 1 star, to represent themselves. Plus the saying "You can take the man out of Texas, but you can't take Texas out of the man." portrays the thinking of many down there.

Hawaii is probably the most beautiful (as far as tropical goes) state. Also, the part of the culture that hasn't been assimilated by the western world, is older than the rest of the states. It also has such a huge tourism industry. Just these factors in themselves could lead many to think it's the best place on earth, which is a great source of pride for Hawaiians.

It seems like many people from these 3 states, are really proud that they live there. I'm from Maryland, and I never notice people here talking of some 'Maryland culture', or even care that they live in this state. The places I mentioned above are the only places I have noticed where there is this attitude of 'state pride' that competes with 'national pride'.

Except, maybe Alabama. They have that song 'Sweet Home Alabama'.

People in WV love to be here and are proud of where they live despite what MDers say. There is a strong sence of home amoung the people here.

For the record: I stated nothing negative about West Virginians.

I've been to Hawaii a couple times. They dont really even take pride in being Hawaiian. They take pride in being "Polynesian". Not once did I hear someone there refer to themselves as "American". lol. I've lived in MD all my life. I take pride in Maryland's crabs. lol.

My friend said that MD gets their crabs from Louisiana, because the Chesapeake has been fished and crabbed dry.

Some restaurants do sell Louisiana & Chinese blue crab, but if you go to the eastern shore, you can def. get some MD blue crabs. I can taste the difference. Nothing beats our crab. The crabbing laws are more strict these days, so for the last 3yrs, MD crabs are hard to find. Cameron's Seafood in Bethesda always has MD blue crabs on hand. But they are VERY expensive.

They also take blue crabs out of the Gulf where I live & ship them up to MD! My neighbor, who used to live in Mt.Airy (small world), told me they do so.

....the point is, Blue Crabs are good, aren't they.
